TEMEZ
20:11 Project
On 29 October 2024 a natural catastrophe affected a vast territory in Spain.
A meteorological phenomenon became more severe due to its association with extreme weather conditions caused by
climate change.
A geographical line, the uncontrolled Poyo ravine left its traces of destruction, staining a region, its landscapes and the
people who inhabit it with mud.
The project 20:11 reflects on the catastrophe and its extrapolation implications to similar phenomena anywhere on the
planet.
The project arose from the need to use mud as a material, as it became a tactile and psychological symbol of a society.
This mud was collected from different locations in the flooded areas and, after undergoing a binding process, transformed
into a pictorial material.
With it, a series of binary images were created, which have their origin in photographs I took along the ravine basin and
which were later recorded on canvas painted with mud paint.
The TEMEZ installation features two of these images: a diptych that shows the traces of the catastrophe in the landscape,
and another in which a vehicle becomes a new landscape component after the flood.
Another element of the work is a composition made of with objects found at a site in the devastated areas. The colour
photographs of the installation, reproduced on paper, were taken here at this location, showing the environmental impact
of the disaster after the fateful date.
Two other components coexist in the work: a graph depicting a dramatic increase in rainfall in the region on the 29th
October, and a formula frequently used to calculate flood flow in watersheds (the Temez method). Both are symbols of the
importance of scientific research to understand, predict and prevent these natural phenomena in the future.
